The Iris
I made this piece at the beginning of my stained glass journey. It was designed and made for my mom as a retirement gift from the family. She’s a big fan of the purple irises that come up every spring. Into this design, I incorporated a purple textured glass that came from the University of Wyoming where my grandfather worked as a painter. I’m not sure how he ended up with the sheets of glass, but he did, and so I found a place to use them that would be meaningful to the recipient. The glass was once clear, but after many years of sunlight it took on a purple hue - funny how that happens. At that time I really enjoyed exploring how the subject could break out of its frame, which I think adds some interest and drama.
